Energy Is the Next Currency

Money has always been a claim on someone's effort. A coin is a promise that a person somewhere will think, lift, build or decide on your behalf. For all of history the supply of that effort was capped by the number of trained human minds and the hours in their days. That cap is now lifting, because thinking itself is becoming something we generate.

When any resource becomes abundant, its price falls, and the scarcity moves to whatever feeds it. Grain gave way to land, land to fuel, fuel to information. Intelligence is following the same road, and the thing that feeds intelligence is energy.

Every answer a machine produces is electricity arranged into meaning. Multiply that by everything humanity will ask of these systems, and the shape of the century becomes visible: the ceiling on how much intelligence a company, a country or a person can wield will be set by the energy they can summon and how wisely they spend it. A watt is becoming a unit of thought waiting to happen.

This is why the builders I watch most closely treat energy as strategy. The advantage will belong to those who can turn energy into intelligence, and intelligence into things people actually need, with the least waste in between.

The same law runs through a human life. Your attention, your health and your curiosity are your energy, and everything you become is purchased with them. Most people spend that currency by default, on noise, on worry, on other people's priorities. The ones who grow spend it deliberately, on learning, on building, on the people they love. In a world where machine intelligence is cheap, how you allocate your human energy becomes the differentiating skill.

I hold businesses to the same test I hold people to: make more than you take. The companies that deserve the future will create more energy than they consume, in their customers, in their teams, and in the world that hosts them. That is the ledger I want to be judged on.

Money will not disappear. It will keep doing what it has always done, trailing behind the real currency as a way of keeping score. But if you want to see where the age of AI is actually going, watch the energy: who generates it, who wastes it, who turns it into growth. The future belongs to the people and the organisations that treat energy, electrical and human alike, as the precious thing it is.
